"Bloomfield"

Villa Nova, Pa., April 5,1948.

Dear Fro.:

My understanding of what was decided at our meeting on Saturday in regard to Curium was as follows:

I. That the Philosophical Society will be approached for a grant of Five Thousand Dollars yearly for the years 1948-9 and 1949-50 to enable us to complete the excavation of the palace and and to clear as much of the theatre, basilica, propylon on the bluff of Curium as may be thought necessary for an adequate publication of those buildings. Inasmuch as it is believed that the inclusion of the Sanctuary of Apollo in the request for a grant might prejudice our chances of obtaining it, this site is to be excluded from the request. As Fales' stipend and living expenses cannot be included in the grant these expenses will have to be debited to the (present) Fifteen Thousand Dollar budget. This means that they will draw on Apollo or nothing will be left to continue the excavation of that site. All other expenses, however, connected with the excavation of buildings on the bluff will be debited to the Ten Thousand Dollar grant.

II. It was decided, however, that excavation should continue at Apollo and to make this possible the University Museum will apply for a joint scholarship for Dr. and Mrs. Young for the year 1948-9. This will release Thirty Two Hundred Dollars (the amount of their present joint scholarship now paid out of Curium funds) and this sum will be available, according, for excavation of the Sanctuary. If in the meantime Dr. and Mrs. Young are offered a job in this country, every effort will be made to have it postponed a year to enable them to complete their work on the figurines at Curium.

III. Should it be impossible to obtain a scholarship for the Youngs, every effort will be made to find other means to [handwritten: expedite/continue] enable them to complete their work at Curium and for [handwritten: use/to] continue the program agreed upon last September on the Sanctuary of Apollo.

I should appreciate it very much if you would let me know if this is correct. [handwritten: Sincerely/Yours, to correct]

Very sincerely yours,
