15 January 1948Director, Department of Antiquities, Nicosia, Cyprus.

Dear Peter, I have just received a letter from Mr Daniel announcing the arrival of the 16 cases of antiquities representing our share of the recent division of the Kaloriziki tombs. He says that in order to clear these through customs at Philadelphia, in the absence of an official certificate consul in the island, it will be necessary to have from you an official certificate stating that the objects in these cases are "antiquities of the 12th to 8th centuries B.C. ... to goes on to say "this statement should contain sufficient detail to enable the customs people to identify the cases. I believe it would be sufficient if it read, for instance: case 1 56 vases, 3 packets pot sherds, tombs 22,23 case 2 ...etc...."

It seems odd that so much should be necessary. I am enclosing herewith an extra copy of the certificate you give [handwritten: to which the original b/1 refer.] Please let me know if you shouldn't might refer. Please let me have a copy of the case lists and key thereto and I will send you one forthwith.
