THE INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY

{hw: Athens Aug 13]

August 5, 1946Dear Mr. Hill,

I had a nice long letter from George, describing the good life in Cyprus, with many hilarious details. George, in fact, at about his best. It reached me shortly before my mother's death, June 19. What with a publication deadline July 1, and family business most of which had to be put off until after that date, I have not answered him, and suppose that he is still near you, please tell him how much I enjoyed the letter, and with what nostalgia.

Though we hear rumors of your movements, nothing seems definite, so I send this to base.

On July 8 last, I received a cable from George from Limassol, which reads: "Hill approves including amphora handles your catalogue. This I can only take to indicate your assent to my request in the penultimate paragraph of my letter to you of March 19, 1946. So, as it does not seem relevant to anything else. unless advised to the contrary. I shall feel authorized to use Curium material to illustrate my survey article (due about September 1) and my account of the known whole Rhodian jars, to follow some time later, which might be described as a catalogue, though not of handles. (I shall need, that is, to illustrate the amphoras from the tombs at St.Hermogenes.)

A more outrageous threat might perhaps wring a letter from you.
