CURIUM EXCAVATIONS EPISKOPI, LIMASSOL CYPRUS
24 November, 1946Dear Mr. Hill,
I had a very pleasant flight down here except in the vicinity of the island of Rhodes where we ran into a storm. We couldn't see a thing and I noticed by observing the clouds, whenever their outlines were visable, that we were going round in circles, and from my little traveling altimeter I saw that we were losing altitude. When we reached an altitude of only a few hundred feet above sea level, the sea still being screened by other passenger clouds, I became slightly nervous. No course and flying seemed to realize that we were not on our course correctly. I deduced correctly that we were not on normal altitude. However, I was able to obtain, if possible, better visability. The lightning was flashing on all sides; it was the first time I have ever really felt sick on a plane. Knowing these waters which I had sailed of often enough, and being anxious to get out of the storm, apparently the pilot was too, I felt tempted to tell him to alter his course south. Fortunately, this is what he finally did, after skimming the surface of the sea for a while in circles, and once away from the mountains of Rhodes and time. From no there on in no coast, we were out of the storm in no time. After arriving at Nicosial called up the Megaws who were on the point of going out to Hilarion to better enjoy there the warm weather they were having. hey invited me to come over for coffee before they set out which I did. the gray taxi for Limassol, meeting our own car, and went on to Episkopi where I arrived a little after sun set. he news that Hillman, at the half way house, and went on to Episkopi where I arrived a little after sun set. he news that you would be soon coming down was greeted with much enthusiasm even though if at first there was a note of slight skepticism in one voice which we hope will have proved wholly unjustifiable. Our working hours are nicely adjusted to village conditions and the daylight which we need for our work during the day and for recreation before supper. We are up before dawn and quit work at four thirty when we all have tea. Joe Last then has his walk, having given up riding for the present; I have my ride, and John and Susanne work in their garden. I went down to the Hellenistic Cemetery to find that you were quite right about the walls of the tomb monument not being hammer worked. I send in soon after arriving I am anxious to have you see the trench before I leave in my paper. I hope Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Blegen will be coming soon afterwards. I find I can rent the Chrysitodomedes house at any time. My very best to both of them. As ever,
