August 8, 1939Dear Mr. Hill,
I have your letter of August 1st and enclose check for $500.00, drawn to the order of Curium Excavations. I am sending it to you so you can endorse it and send it on to the Ottoman Bank. I hope this will be enough to settle things for the present.
I am afraid I cannot give you a detailed statement as to the expenditures on account of repair of the mosaic, as my account books are now with the luggage I left at Berchtesgaden before coming here to meet my sister and brother-in-law. I read you letter on the train to Cortina where I met them and we are now touring the South Italian Tirol together. But I will send you a statement as soon as I return to Berchtesgaden next week, or within ten days at the most.
I am glad to hear some water has been found, and if it is really enough for both house and garden if used with care this will be very rewarding.
This is the first season I think I failed to include all the payrolls in my account book, though I am afraid I've allowed accounts to run on without balancing from time to time and this will not happen again. I didn't pay the men off time and this will not happen again. I didn't pay the men off myself this season but let Pete do so as he had so many more men and then neglected to get always an account from him.
I am glad you had a pleasant cruise back to Patras and hope you managed to put in at Argostoli on the way; I suppose this would have depended upon how early you were able to sail from Corfou.
Sincerely yours,
