9 Plutarch Street, Athens

August 1 1939Dear George,

Please send me as soon as possible a detailed statement of your expenditures on account of repair of the mosaic, June 10 to June 24. I now have Pete's account, total £72:10:8, for the time after June 25. With yours for the preceding fortnight I can make out a full statement and get half repaid, perhaps in season to be applied to September current expenses. Those for August should be more than covered by the balance in bank (about £43).

In the meantime there will be the rather large sum Pete will be calling for when he gets here this week. It will, apparently, be £85 to £90. The account he sends includes expenditures June 24 to July 25 in full detail, but shows no receipts at all. These, however, were whatever balance there was in the treasury the evening of June 24, £160 drawn from the bank, and a sum he got by cabling to his own bank in America -- you see how hard it is to add up these three items.

The expenditures recorded were, in rough summary:

Purchase of Bamboula lot £13:15: Apollo wages (incl.Tryphon) 10: 2:6 Tryph & Soph transport 1:15: Carpenter, Apollo 4:18: Cook, wages & rent 4:15:2 " laundry 5: 5: Savvi, back pay 2: 3:6 Food supplies, back bills 3: 0: Milk, June 3: 2:2 Christo, bonus 5: 0: Extra 50ft. of well 5: 0: Petrol 3: 0:7 Hotels etc (Paph, Nic) 1:19:4 Susanne's travel exp etc 15:4 (1/2 paid steamer fare) Cablegrams Labor, household etc Mosaic

Concerning the well Pete writes: "The well-drillers have come and are now going. They found abundant first water at 50 or 60 ft (I don't know exactly), but then drilled to 200 ft without finding anything more. They were willing to continue but the director felt that there was almost no chance of finding anything. They say that it order to make use of the first water it is necessary to dig a well and build a collecting chamber in it. Enough water will then gather ...for the house and for the garden too if it is used with care I have taken it upon myself to start the digging of the well. It will cost about £5. As it is we pay nearly a pound a week to water-boys, so it will pay for itself very quickly in the summer.
