… my negotiations with Georko over rent and indemnity for the Bamboula. I went over the area with Christo before hand, and we decided that the best thing to do was to arrange to pay rent for the land left open from last year, and at the same time to agree on a price for the new areas to be dug this year. Matters were complicated by a very good crop of wheat. I also hoped to remove one of his darling almond trees, but was prepared to renounce it if necessary. I went up with Georko and showed him the land and the tree. I then [handwritten: asked] what he wanted. His answer was "Kyrie Daniel, last year when we had trouble over the water, you helped us, and we remember it. Whatever you say is acceptable to us" I named my price, £3-10-0, including rent, crops, and tree, for both last year and this, and he accepted with a smile and invited me to his house to celebrate the agreement. Of all the things I have anticipated in Episkopi, that was certainly not one of them. If you remember, you agreed last [handwritten: year] to Christo's recieving [handwritten: spring] an increase of 0-10-0 a month on his salary as guard. He has never recieved it. If you would authorize either George or me to pay the amount which Christo claims as still due him, it would settle a distinct source of dissatisfaction. George seems rather inclined not to have Tryphon back this year, and we are trying to figure out a schedule whereby Christo can take charge of both digs. It seems to me that the best thing would be for one of us to have him in the morning, the other in the afternoon. This will mean that one person in each dig will have to be given a certain amount of [handwritten: authority] over and above that of the
