Dear Mr. Hill,
Professor Kent had so many suggestions to make about the linguistics of the article of which I mailed you a copy only this morning that I decided to rewrite it. Here is the second edition, of which I am sending Miss Swindler a copy in the same mail. If there was any chance of the first version meeting with your approval, this second one should be sure to so so. At least I hope so.
The museum photographer made me a print of the photograph of the pithos in situ for fig.1, and did a beautiful job of it.
I had the second letter in a week from Schaeffer, telling me that the seal used to impress the sherd which I published in the Bamboula report is Syrian, of the time of Hammurapi. Both Olmstead and von der Osten regarded it as Mesopotamian, though they agree in date. [handwritten: with Schaeffer] Schaeffer says that he has a cylinder seal like the archer one at Enkomi, and that it is Syrian of the 12th century. A claim I had already made for ours.
I was pleased to see that Kent regards the main argument in this enclosed article as sound, and seemed quite pleased with it. Bates didn't notice the linguistic errors, and is really in a dither about it.
Hastily,
Handwritten: Pete
Handwritten: P.S. Would you communicate with Miss Swindler directly if there is anything you want changed in this? It may be possible to get it in the next A.J.A.
