… recieves from us. He also points out that an ordinary government appointed guard, as at Bella Paise, recieves a minimum wage of £ 3-10-0, raised to £ 4-0-0 after a few years, and also gets lodging and free clothes, to say nothing of tips. And his only duties are to keep the place clean and show visitors around. Whereas Christo has full responsability for three sites and the houses and apothekes with all the managerial labour involved. For instance he must tend to the watering and care of the gardens, necessary repairs, and supervise the work and paying of various people who work in our absence, such as a well digger this year, the carpenter last year. In short he says that his work is far more than that of an ordinary guard, and that he regards his present salary as very insufficient. I do hope you will approve of his recieving a substantial raise. George will tell you of Christo's entire management of buying land, at extraordinarily good terms, and of his instrumentality at in saving nearly £ 50 on the bits on the house.
I will hope to find you in Athens when I come up a fortnight hence, so as to tend to my business as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely, Pete
P.S. I will tend to your commissions regarding the paper inventory, plans, and informing Christo of my base marks at the Bamboula.
