October 1 1937Dear George,

Your telegram reading "scholarship Peto unlikely until summer. Jayne suggests stipend 1500. What do you advise? Arriving Athens about twentieth. Answer Packard Building, reached no yesterday. School 1700, Agora 1400 Mecamhilo suggest Expedition allow Peto fifty monthly plus expenses. Stop. Cox unavailable. Greco returning America. Please Impress Jayne importance (of) completion (of) her work for Lapithos".

I assume that Jayne's suggestion as to the amount of stipend has to do with the following. We may hope will be available for Peto next year, also that it has not proved practicable to award him a special fellowship for the current year. This being the case, I think that he should have about 150 a month from the Curium expedition when he works for it, as he will doubtless be doing most of the time from now until next summer. I expect that his first job when he returns to Cyprus will be to pack the Lapithos pottery with which Virginia has finished. It is understood that Chiamenti will pay him at the rate of 50 a month besides expenses (He was to notified) but the rate of first arranged for his work at Taronas, but Miss Goldman found it impossible to pay anything above expenses before he went, and consequently he most decided not to go at all.

I mention Miss Cox and Greco because I cannot recall whether I have written you that the former has a position at New Haven, and the latter is to carry out the program of which we know last spring that he is to return to America for the winter and to spend considerable time in Philadelphia, where he has the Museum, there will then still remain the work on the Lapithos things from Lapithos in the Episkopi storeroom to be photographed and studied. I very much hope that this work may now be done just as could happen to make the necessary grant so that Miss Cox could work for us it would be a great gain. But soon as possible. If you should happen to find an architect who could finish Miss Cox's work for us it would be a great gain. But we can talk of the problem of plan-making when you come.

It had been my intention to spend the whole of September in Corinth, but as it turns out I haven't been there now, however, very soon and about August 20. I shall go out there when you arrive; but not very long after the shall probably be there when you arrive; but not very long after the 20th I shall wish to be in Athens for a few days, when I shall expect to see you and talk everything over.

I send this letter in duplicate to Morgan's, Paris, and to Philadelphia, though I shall not be surprised if you do not receive either copy until after you have arrived here, if then.
