[handwritten: Another thing which struck me is that he does not know the Mycenaean material, he has only the vaguest ideas about it. In fact I don't feel that he knows even the expriote pottery any too well. He has a general view of the whole thing, but he does not really understand the essentials. He has ear-marks (usually of a most theoretical "kunsthistorische" type), W.F.I., II, etc., but he does not seem to know what is fundamental and what is purely fortuitous. It is not becoming to be too confident, but I do feel quite certain that if it were to come to a showdown on this matter, I could handle my side of the argument much better than he his. While I would certainly not convince him, I think that most unbiased archaeologists would see that his objections are based on general principles which are absolutely untenable. The result of our conferences (though there will be more) is to strengthen my confidence in my own work. I was not sure what he had, and thought that he might really have something to weigh against mine. I know how that he doesn't. It is difficult to argue with, because he is rather vague, and it is almost impossible to pin him down to facts. As soon as I bring up a fact against his argument he retires into a general principle, never the principle lies the facts.]
