American Excavations, Tarsus, Turkey

April 10, 1936Dear Mr. Hill,

Here I am, safe and sound, after my many peregrinations.

I arrived the 8th and started digging yesterday, immediately winning my place in the sun by turning out two Assyrian cuneiform tablets (followed by a third to-day), the only ones yet found in Tarsus.

I heard from the University of California. I was not given the fellowship I asked for, but by some fluke I was awarded the "Bowles Travelling Fellowship", with a stipend of $1500. I am delighted, of course, and am cabling my acceptance. That is one of the four or five best fellowships offered at Berkeley; in fact there are only two better and one for the same amount, and they are for specific departments. That adds a special delight.
