9 Plutarch Street, Athens,

February 26, 1936J.R.Hilton, Esq., Director of Antiquities, Nicosia, Cyprus.

Dear Mr.Hilton,

Our plans have had to be considerably changed since I last wrote you (1st February), and only Mr.McFadden, who brings this letter, will reach Cyprus by March 1st, while I am to arrive toward the end of the month and Mr.Daniel may not come until summer. Miss Cox is now on her way to Tarsus where she will again, as last spring, act as architect of the American expedition excavating there.

As you will have gathered from the above items we do not plan to carry on a regular campaign of excavation at Curium this spring. I shall in due course ask for an extension of our Permit (which expires May 25th 1936 by its original terms) so that regular work may be resumed in the autumn.

Meanwhile I should like with your approval to have Mr.McFadden, before my arrival, regume his work in the Sanctuary of Apollo. He has, I understand, first to give some attention to correction of contractor's errors in the construction of the roof over the mosaics on 'Palaeokastron'. How long this will take is naturally uncertain and we cannot foresee now just when he will be ready to return to the Apollo Sanctuary. When he is ready I hope that George can be spared from the Museum to act as foreman again.

I have given Mr.McFadden copies of your letter of January 20th (or rather of the notice sent therewith) and of mine to you of February 1st. If you think best he will begin negotiations with owners of fields subject to expropriation; but, unless it seems desirable that the negotiations be started immediately he will prefer to let them await my arrival.

Sincerely yours,
