… weeks or less. I will spend four or five days in Metsovo and probably about the same in Janina.

When I wired from Vourgarelion and mentioned illness, I was speaking not of myself, but of Alix, who had a serious run-in with an adder, an "οχεια" of tremendous proportions. We had left Vourgarelion to come here, and were nearly two hours up on Tsoumerka when it happened. I gashed the wound, sucked the blood, put on a tourniquet, and rushed her down to Vourgarelion, where there was a passable doctor. She was in the greatest of agony for 24 hours, and was in great pain for some time after. The swelling spread to a large part of her body, and even now her left hand (the one which was bitten) is somewhat swollen, and

apparently still pretty sore. She has to keep it in a sling, and can't yet let her arm hang down at her side.

In spite of all this she insisted on continuing the trip to Metsovo as we had planned it, and now she is all for a tour of the Zagoria villages. But I am very much against that, and intend to leave here as soon as she is well rested, for Janina, and then Athens. If her hand is really better by then we may go from Janina through the Souli to Parga, and take the boat back from there, rather than taking the bus trip to Prevesa.

In all events I hope to be in Athens within two weeks, and hope that I will find you there. If there are any further developments by the time this reaches you, a letter
