March 1, 1935Julian H. Whittlesey, Esq., 420 Madison Avenue, New York, N. Y.

Dear Mr. Whittlesey:

Mr. Jayne and I have both apologised, by telephone, for our unspeakable delay in acting on your recommendations for the post which you were unable to fill at Cyprus. We regret that the subject came up while we were in the midst of (a) the new budget (b) membership drive (c) outgoing loan exhibits so that it is some weeks since any of us has drawn a deep breath.

As to the choice of architects, Mr. Jayne shared my feeling that if possible students already in Europe, whose personal interest in Hellenic archaeology is guaranteed, ought to be preferred, if such are obtainable to architects established in professional practice. We had accordingly cabled Dr. Hill to that effect, with the provision that if he is unable to find anyone he is to cable us back. In that case we will be delighted to know that Mr. Comak is available, and we wish to express our deep gratitude for the concern you have showed in this matter.

When were you in Greece with Dr. Hill? I got to know him quite well during my term (1926-8) at the School in Athens and would have joined him in Cyprus in 1931 had I not begun work at Minturno, Italy.

Very sincerely yours,
