8 January, 1935Dear George:

yesterday, after a letter to you had been posted in which I told you that Miss Cox had written that she definitely cannot come to Kourion, a young American architect called to offer his services. When I asked Mr. Stillwell's opinion of this man's qualifications, he suggested that we might possibly be able to get Julian Whittlesey who worked at Corinth in 1931. He is a graduate of Yale, thoroughly competent and a good fellow in architecture, of about your age or perhaps a little younger, thoroughly competent and a good fellow in every way. I invited him to join our staff at Lapithos in '31, but he had to return home that autumn (first taking a month off to sail about the Aegean in a small boat). He would be quite perfect for our job at Kourion and I have therefore written him the letter of which a copy is enclosed, however, there is a possibility that the Museum, and care to join us. Since, cannot come, has been able to detail us somebody having learned that Miss Cox that case, see that Whittlesey is from another expedition, will you not in informed immediately? His address is either or

Julian H. Whittlesey 122 East 65th Street New Haven.

Julian H. Whittlesey 123 College Street New Haven.

I am sending my letter to both places.

If I can manage I intend to run down to Cyprus for a fortnight the latter part of this month to attend to preliminaries, so that we may be delayed as little here I shall be away probably from January 19 to February 7. that I can leave here it may be ready to begin work. If I find So if you sail on the Conte di Savoia you may reach Athens ahead of me. Mr. Biegen, with whom as I have written you I had to do a little work at Nemea, is due here about February 15. He had to abandon his plan of taking a ship coming all the way to Greece since he has to stop in Cambridge on account of business with the C. Univ. Press which is printing his book on the Argive Heraeum.

I imagine that the "Samothrace" will require a good deal of your attention when you come, but I shall have to be for at least a few days in February. I count upon your paying me that promised visit at Corinth where I shall come to Nemea for a day or two while Biegen and I are there. And perhaps you will come see you here extensively. Please communicate with 9 Plutarch as soon as you arrive. In any event I shall of course see you as soon as you arrive.

As soon as pressure of work lets me I shall write to Mr. Jayne about both Kourion and Lapithos -- especially the latter, since he knows all about the former from you. We shall be finding the authorities less cordial to our enterprises than they have been if it continues to be impossible to report definite arrangements for publication of the results of our work at Kourion and I hope that before we have occasion to ask for an extension of the permit for K. Lapithos may have been resumed. work on the finds from Lapithos may have been resumed.

Here's wishing you a very good voyage!

Sincerely,

B. H. Hill (signed)
