If plans of the separate trenches show the nearest stakes and semadia of the list (A-G and 1-53) we shall be able to place the trenches pretty well -- some of them accurately. If, as I imagine, pt.47 41 has not been marked at all, a stake should be driven wherever is convenient for the plan of VI and its distance measured from F, 40 and 42. In most cases distances between stakes at ends of trenches will be needed, but they will generally appear from the plan of the trenches. As the stakes were not in position for George's plans, please -- always supposing there is time -- get the distances D-31, F-F' (corrected, that is), F'-43, and the distance from each of these six points from some conspicuous feature of the trench concerned.
I enclose another cheque on the chance of need, and will try to write one more letter, which should reach you by the Khedivial next Thursday. This since you reported that the air route via Egypt worked a fortnight ago. George's party has reached Phaleron bay. I have seen him, however, only by telephone.
