9 Plutarch Street, Athens,

19 December 1934Dear Pete:

Here are George's lists of objects from Trenches I V & VII and Tombs 18 & 29, with tracings (leaving a good deal out) from his plans of the two tombs. You may perhaps find the plans and lists useful in connection with your organization of the finds from last season's excavation. I hope that all the listed things that matter will be readily found. Will you let me know about items 46, 53, 54 and 59, and if possible send me by Miss Gutman items 83 and 85? [These two coins were not taken to the Cyprus Museum and are not here with the others].

I think it would be a good idea to send [handwritten: me] the films not here already by Miss Gutman, also. Those you left with me are: V 9-12; VI 1-2, 4-10, 12; VII 1-12; VII 1, 5-12; IX 1-12; all duly labeled. Besides, there are unmarked: XIV 1-9, 11-12; a film expected to be XIV 10 but not fitting in that place and belonging probably to XII (4 or 6[handwritten: ?]) [I enclose duplicate print of it]; and two negatives probably from film X, showing the big capital in Trench XX. I have asked George to send a full set of prints from his negatives now and to bring the films when he comes.

He sends rather encouraging news. He will himself support a proper full campaign this coming season, if necessary, but seems confident that the University Museum will also take some financial responsibility for the excavation. He asks me to tell you when I see you that he will be writing you shortly. He expects to get here early in February and to stay a little while before going on to Cyprus; and asks whether we shall be all through this year by the end of May. As to that I shall be favorable since I wish very much to get to Troy in June, and anyhow it is possible enough that June this year will be like last July and you will tell us that all hands better get away.

I look for a letter from you now very soon, telling me all about how you have found things and sending a full financial statement.

All best wishes for Christmas and New Years!

Sincerely,

I see that I have omitted to mention (though I have twice implied) that Elizabeth Gutman is about to visit Cyprus. She comes on the boat "Vienna" that brings this letter and, I think, expects to return either by the "Egitto" Jan 5 or by a Greek boat Jan 7. If Professor Robinson and Joe Shelley, who will be on the "Vienna" en route to Syria, drive from Limassol to Nicosia and Larnaka, she will probably go with them to Nicosia and begin her visit there. Otherwise she may start from Limassol. She counts on seeing you of course, and she tells me she will be glad to bring back to me anything you wish to send.
