The only rule to observe is a prohibition on movement outside the towns or villages after 19 h and until sunrise.

Numerous motorised patrols enforce this curfew, and out of ignorance I had to, on the first day, encounter one of them between the village and the house. Everything went very well, moreover, but it is preferable to avoid this kind of thing, for mere nervousness has sometimes, after a recent attack for example, a direct effect on the triggering of a weapon. Apologies offered posthumously are very sweet things but quite useless.

On the financial side, apart from the £60 (car), my largest expenses concern the equipment (stakes, ropes) requested by Aitken.

On the other hand, since his preliminary work has obliged me to postpone the area proper, the sums allocated to the workmen's pay are still in the bank. The manager of the Barclay's b. has moreover asked me to convey his greetings to you.

I think I have summarised all the questions. You will be able to find the complement in the logbook you asked me for, and barring an event on the area (archaeological, of course) I do not think I shall write again before your arrival, for fear that my letter should cross yours.

No mail for you has yet arrived here. I would be glad to go and fetch you at Famagusta if you can let me know of your arrival, the return will thus familiarise you with the little car.

Hoping that you have had an excellent crossing and that the news from Ras Shamra will be satisfactory, I beg you, as well as Madame Schaeffer, to believe in the expression of my respectful sentiments.
