ENKOMI 1953 (start of the Campaign)

Friday 13 NovemberOpening of the excavations at 6H30. Two trenches in the shape of a "T" are started at the S.-W. corner of the Temple area, and to make the junction with the area of Building 18. 26 workmen (picks) and 30 workwomen fem mes (shovels) were engaged this morning for the excavations. This first day, apart from a few sherds (three of them painted) was sterile. However walls in red brick and others in rubble masonry of rubble stones appeared, most often as extensions of walls already partly cleared in 1950. I note already, from this start, the extreme frequency of old village excavations in the form of funnels, generally Threat of rain - A few drops during the day.

Saturday 14 November .As yesterday, temperature very cool. At 11H35, first find of metal: a bronze ring, taken out of an old excavation unfortunately. In the course of the afternoon, the following finds are worth noting: a fine painted Mycenaean sherd (red spiral) a bronze pin, a fragment of a female head in terracotta, fragments of a zoomorphic vessel in terracotta and a jar handle incised with a Cypriot sign.
