in a straight line the "main" entrance to the town on the side of the sea marked by a ramp in the cliff. – To verify this theoretical line, a sounding was opened. I then assumed that this same street, for a time called "fifth avenue", on the opposite side, that is to say at its W end should lead to a door, the W gate of the town. After taking the measurements and establishing the alignment, I immediately had opened here a sounding in the alignment of the enclosure W. – Likewise, extending on the ground by means of stakes, the N-S street towards the south, I theoretically fixed the S gate of the town. Here too a sounding, to find this gate, was begun. At its N end, the N-S street aims exactly at the point where the present Enkomi- Styllos road crosses the enclosure and where we suppose the existence of the N gate. At its S end, the same street aims at the point where the road of the Enkomi fields towards Styllos crosses the S enclosure. At these two points the present roads therefore seem to have used the ancient passages through the enclosure of the town ancient. The N-S street marking fairly exactly the d median of the town (equally distant from the cliff, as from the W enclosure), it is probable that this was the only N-S artery of the town. The blocks to the East and West were therefore of form
