September 29th. Department of Archaeology.

Dear Professor Schaeffer,

I have long wanted to meet you, as I have always been most impressed by your work in Cyprus, an island on which I have been working for several years. Unfortunately I have always missed you, both in my visits there and to the Louvre, so that my introductory letters from Professor Mallowan have never been used.

However, I wonder if I may trouble you with a query concerning Mr Berard's excavations at Ktima, which were so sadly interrupted. I am at present working on a study of Cypriot fibulae, and am particularly anxious to know whether any were found during these excavations, and, if so, whether it might be possible to see drawings or photographs of them merely for comparative purposes. I have the feeling that they would be of extreme importance, if any were actually found. Perhaps you would be able to tell me with whom I should get in touch about this;also, indeed, if you yourself have come across any fibulae, particularly in LB contexts at Enkomi, but also in any later IA tombs, I should be most grateful to know, as I should very much like the study to be as complete as possible.

As you see, I am a new member of the Sydney Archaeology department, with several of whose members I believe you are already well acquainted; the Research Assistant here now on his way to England, Robert Merrillees, seems to be doing a very good job on your Vounous pottery.

With best wishes,

yours sincerely,
