Dear Dr Schaeffer,
I am very concerned to learn that you have not yet received the photographs dispatched to you in my absence, as I thought,on the 27th December. I have at once made enquiries and the position is as follows. They were to be dispatched on the 21st but we delayed them till the 27th to avoid the Xmas rush. It now appears that my Secretary unfortunately translated "Liban" into Libya and addressed the envelope accordingly.
Apparently a letter similarly wrongly addressed, dated October 23rd reached you quite safely as you acknowledged it. The letter that has gone astray was as usual sent by registered air mail. We have been in touch with the Post Office and they say that there is little likelihood of its being lost. This is to some extent comforting but I regret exceedingly this unfortunate delay and I will notify you at once if it turns up here. It may of course go straight to your address in which case perhaps you will let me know.
I cannot, of course, get a duplicate of the colour photograph but have had another photomontage print prepared and send it herewith. The other silver bowl has now arrived. It contains no gold fragments and I look forward to making a provisional examination and search for possible ornament in the course of a few days.
Yours sincerely,
