Dear Dr. Schaeffer,

We dispatched the coloured photographs and the photo-montage ensemble to you at your Libya address with a covering letter dated 21st December, and I am concerned to hear that they have not reached you. I am hoping, however, that by now they will have been forwarded on to you and all is well.

I am returning, herewith, the proofs corrected i.e. the captions anglicised as you suggested in your marginal pencil notes, and I have changed the word "bowl" to "cup" wherever it appears in order to be consistent, also, references had been added in the text to figures 119 and 122 which I had thought of initially as merely textual diagrams. This seems now to be all in order, and I should just like to add that we, here, make a practice of reserving the word "damascene" for the entirely different technique applied particularly in the manufacture of Persian and Indian swords etc., and we should describe the gold embellishment of the cup as "inlay". Do you think you could agree, therefore, to amend the French caption accordingly?

With all good wishes, and looking forward to our meeting later on in the year,

Yours sincerely,
