Dear Sir Thomas,
I have heard from Schaeffer of the interesting results of Plenderleith's treatment of the silver cup from the excavations at Enkomi (previously described as a bronze bowl); also that Plenderleith had asked him on your behalf whether the cup might be exhibited temporarily in the British Museum, before it is returned to Schaeffer (who has it on loan from the Government of Cyprus). Schaeffer has agreed subject to my concurrence and this I readily give.
Schaeffer stipulates that the cup, which is of course unpublished, should not be photographed or drawn by another archaeologist while on exhibition in the B.M. and suggests that the period of exhibition should be a fortnight or a month. I would agree to a longer period, for Schaeffer has asked that the return of the cup to Cyprus should be delayed until he has had an opportunity of seeing it and I doubt if he will be back in Europe before December. When he arrives here next month I shall let you know if he agrees to a longer exhibition should you desire it
He has suggested the following for the label, with which I agree:
"Silver cup inlaid with gold found in an intact tomb at Enkomi in Cyprus, in 1949 Excavations of the Franco-British Combined Expedition to Enkomi, with C.F.A.Schaeffer in charge."
I would only add "on loan from the Government of Cyprus" whose property it is pending division of
