Pardigon, by Cavalaire s/Mer (Var), 20-VII-53. My dear Master and Colleague, I thank you for the offprint of your study on the cup of Enkomi and for the compliments you were good enough to address to me on this occasion. I shall certainly profit from your observations, but I feel I must regret some of your criticisms which I do not think I have deserved. - To enable specialists such as yourself to quickly become acquainted with my discoveries, I strive, as you know from Syria and my reports definitive, to provide a succinct commentary, but giving all the information, sometimes depriving myself of the benefit of the first publication. If you add my chap. on the cup written in extremis when the restoration was finished when the vol. was already in press, to the account of tomb 2, I do not think one can describe as "indigent" (p. 3, note 3) my report. That discourages the best goodwill. And if I have not added the reproduction of the cup from Midea, I have done as you did, p. 6, note 1, the piece being known from numerous works, including manuals or collections such as that of Bossert. P. 4, I could not compare the technique of the 2 cups, not having seen that of Midea for a long time. There is, in any case, not 2 "sheets" in the case of that of Enk., it is of fairly thick silver; p. 6. I think like you for the horns to a search for style, but I take the liberty of pointing out to you
