S/S Ausonia, 7. XII. 57 (posted at Athens) Dear Monsieur Lapierre, Since our last conversation, the duel at Nicosia has ended honourably. I obtained the two bronzes, the only ones capable of making me forget a little the loss of Zeus and of the silver and gold bowl. In all thus 946 objects have been allotted to the French Mission, against 1165 to the Cyp. Mus. I have taken away in seven cases, Saturday 30 Nov. the most precious objects, which are travelling with me. Mr Kuss stayed at Nicosia to supervise the packing of the mass of pottery which will fill, I do not yet know how many cases. He will telephone you when everything is ready. Then I would ask you then to help him with the transport. Mr Megaw will obtain a pass from the Security authorities as for my cases. Thus any inspection both by the Military and by Customs subsequent to the closing of the cases will be avoided. And this is indispensable. If this is not obtained, I prefer that the cases remain at Nicosia. — The "Security peoples" are the least difficult if the embarkation takes place on a Greek boat, and you can guess why. One must on no account choose an English or other cargo ship which carries military equipment.
