Dear Professor Schaeffer,
Thank you for your letter of 26th November. I am sorry mine addressed to Lattaquié took so long to reach you. Yours on 3rd November from Beirut was also delayed. It is too bad that when you had to stop at Ras Shamra circumstances made it impossible for you to move to Enkomi. If only you could have got here before the operations started it would have been alright.
However the great demand for labour arising from military activities might have created difficulties for you. Dikaios who only used a couple of men and a few women for his supplementary investigations said it would not have been easy to find more, especially men. We trust that next year this labour shortage will end. Dikaios was working at the west end of our North Wall area where only the top level had been exposed. He finds that LCI is virtually absent there and that the LCII complex comes to a definite end. Beyond it an area, evidently open, where slags were dumped was built over in the period of Myc. IIIC pottery, up to the City Wall, but in rubble construction. The only finds except fragmentary pottery were a nice paste cylinder and a small gold repoussé pendant with a female figure. He will now be able to go ahead with his report on this area with more confidence about the sequence of events before and after the construction of the City Wall.
Your finds which we brought up from the Khan for the division we shall keep in the Museum. Would you like us to proceed with any preliminaries for the division? We could for a start consider how the tomb groups might be divided having regard to the requirements of the law.
remplacemtvases deJ. BérardAs to Bérard's destroyed pots, I had thought not to touch the groups which he excavated and we retained, but rather to offer some partial replacement from the material which was found in the same cemetery in the digging of air-raid trenches during the war.
Please give our kind regards to Madame Schaeffer and accept our best wishes for Christmas and for better times for us all in 1957 Yours sincerely
