25th July, 1956

Dear Professor Schaeffer,

that wasSince I wrote to you last (on 19th March, '56), about the proposal that Mr. Stewart should take over, mend and publish that part of your share of the French Mission's Vounous finds which remain in the Cyprus Museum store room, we have been engaged in checking this material against the inventories and division lists. We have also located more of the above pottery in the Students Gallery, but still have not identified more than about half of the items that should be present if everything came here entered in the inventories (including the many items recorded simply as fragments or sherds). There are in addition a number of pieces from the store-room which having now no numbers, are suspected of belonging to the same series, but have not been identified as any of the missing items.

The point has now been reached where, although we have not quite completed all the searching which should be done, it seems that we are unlikely to add very much to the bulk of the material already identified. This at present amounts to 172 items which we estimate could be accommodated in 8 average cases. That is the information Stewart wanted in order that he may arrange to finance transportation of the material to Australia. I am therefore sending him a copy of this letter.

Dikaios has lately left on a trip which will take him ultimately to Sweden, where he has to arrange the division of Furumark's Sinda material.

We have been making headway here with preparations for the Enkomi division. Our tomb groups have been assembled in one place, and tomb lists prepared. Dikaios has also extracted from his inventories of unnumbered finds found on floors etc. all those items of special interest and value. These items are likewise being assembled for easy inspection. There remains the transportation of your material from the Khan to the Museum. I daresay to gain time you would wish this to be done before your arrival. Perhaps you will confirm.

With kind regards Yours sincerely A.H.S. Megaw

Prof. C.F.A. Schaeffer, M.A., D. Litt. Le Castel Blanc, 14 Rue Turgot, St. Germain-en-Laye (S.et O.), France.
