edged with their horns and decorated with a few bony rosettes of deer.

It thus appears probably in the same immediately following period as the fine statue of the horned god found some 75 metres away in a similar hiding place and in a similar archaeological context, during the excavations carried out in 1949 by the Antiquities Service within the framework of the Joint Expedition franco-chypriote and which N. P. Dikaios, then curator of the Archaeological Museum of Nicosia, will publish in volume II of this expedition (1).

The discovery at Enkomi in 1963 of the bronze statue of a warrior god standing on a Cypriot bronze ingot (we shall show it in volume II of Enkomi-Alasia in preparation) constitutes a major contribution to the knowledge of the civilisation and art of the final period, still very poorly known, of the protohistory of the island as well as of the whole region of the Eastern Mediterranean.

It has become customary to call this period that of the Peoples of the North and of the Sea, whose movements, of origin and causes still obscure, took place, indeed, during the last years of the 13th and the beginning of the 12th century, and whose contemporary Egyptian historiographers described the invasion of the Delta and the naval defeat at the mouths of the Nile in the time of Pharaoh Ramesses III (c.1198-1166).
