DEPARTMENT OF ANTIQUITIES, CYPRUS.

Nicosia, 19th April, 1949.

Dear Schaeffer,

Dikaios, now back at Enkomi, has asked me to forward the enclosed letter and photos and to add the weights of the ingots. One weighs 30.5 Cyprus okes, which equals 38.7 kilogrammes: that which is now in Los Angeles weighs 25.25 or 32.1 kilogrammes.

I must also thank you for your letter of 8th April, just received, to which I shall reply when I have been into the various matters you mention.

Meanwhile you will want to hear the news from Enkomi, which I visited yesterday. Dikaios is at present working within the limits of the area opened last winter. Although the later levels are gradually being worked through they are still much in evidence; suggesting that the sub-mycenaean period was an important one at Enkomi. Along the east limit of the area opened and near its south end a floor with hearth and painted sub-mycenaean pottery of the wavy line type has been cleared; as its east wall is outside the area opened Dikaios will probably extend it somewhat to the east. By degrees more of the fine quality masonry is being discovered below the indifferent sub-mycenaean rubble construction. In the room where the statue was found a deposit of late base-ring cups has appeared below the level with which the statue was associated.
