cf. p. 80 dendumIn the island of Cyprus, at the site of Enkomi-Alasia, one has continued the stratigraphic study of the remains of the towns which succeeded one another from the Middle Bronze to a fairly advanced moment of the Iron Age I. The excavations have notably made it possible to clear the essentials of what can be called a new and important sanctuary, founded in the Late Bronze Age, and still in use in the 10th century, has in to judge by the finds and the stratigraphy of the floors late superimposed, above the level of the Early Iron I, of the 12th century Vessels characteristic of the Cypro-Geometric I, which correspond chronologically to the Protogeometric of the Greek mainland and to the Iron I age of Palestine, have been uncovered in situ, in the main hall of the sanctuary and the small rooms opening to the west of this hall. These new discoveries at Enkomi find an echo in the identical results obtained at the site of Kition-Larnaca by the Department of Antiquities. Two terracottas representing curious two-headed quadrupeds, a kind of centaur, were the most striking and most unexpected discoveries of the final layer at Enkomi in 1962. In the underlying strata, of the Final Bronze, interesting painted sherds were recovered on the white floors of the period of the Close Style, which is better and better documented at Enkomi over the last few years.
