SUMMARY REPORT of activity 1962/1963 by J.-C. COURTOIS (File sent to the CNRS on 4 March 1963)
1. Near Eastern Archaeology. — Active participation in the campaigns of excavations at Ras-Shamra-Ugarit (September - November 1962) and at Enkomi-Alasia on the island of Cyprus (November - December 1962) under the general direction of Professor Claude F.A. Schaeffer, member of the Institut. The excavations of 1962 took place on either side of the large North - South trench, opened the previous year on the south slope of the acropolis of the Tell of Ras Shamra. It was the northern part of the area that we had to supervise and more particularly the West trenches, the East trenches being progressively entrusted to the new collaborator of the Expedition, M. J. Lagarce. As the discoveries were made and the excavation progressed, all archaeological observations and stratigraphic observations were recorded in the excavation notebooks. Several levels, already located and identified in 1961, were uncovered between the present surface of the tell and an average depth of three metres: the importance of the architectural remains of the Hellenistic period and of the Greek or Persian period was confirmed, and in several places it was possible to distinguish clearly the two successive phases of architectural development
