MINERALS and SLAGS of CYPRUS
---------------
I.- MODERN ORE.-
This ore presents itself as a compact grey dull, it is dotted in places with small crystals of yellow pyrite. Bluish patches show the presence of copper sulphate.
Analyses:
Loss on ignition (oxidising medium: 35,74 reducing medium: 29,45
Iron oxide (Fe2O3) .......... 58,87 Copper oxide (CuO) ......... 2,90 Total sulphur .................. 47,51 Sulphuric anhydride (SO3) .... 6,48 Silica (SiO2) ................. 0,90 Alumina (Al2O3) ............... 2,23 Phosphoric anhydride (P2O5) .. 0,027
It may be assumed that the composition of the ore is approximately as follows:
Silica (SiO2) ................. 0,90 Alumina (Al2O3) ............... 2,33 Phosphoric anhydride (P2O5) .. 0,027 Iron sulphide (FeS2) ......... 84,22 Iron sulphate (SO4Fe) ........ 6,80 Copper sulphate (SO4Cu) ..... 5,80
The ore is therefore an iron and copper pyrite oxidised, it indeed contains 6,48 of sulphuric anhydride which indicates that the sulphides have partially transformed into sulphates soluble in water.
We note:
1°) The great purity of this ore. The total content of silica, alumina, phosphoric anhydride is only 3,60 %.
2°) In the course of the analysis only traces of nickel and arsenic were found. Total absence of lime, of magnesia, of manganese, of tin, of lead, of nickel, of cobalt.
