Mr Professor Dr. C.F. SCHAEFFER Collège de France The White Castle 14. Rue Turgot St.Germain-en-Laye

P a r i s ---------

Dear Mr SCHAEFFER!

Unfortunately, due to the transfer of the Palmnicken amber works (East Prussia) to the Russians, a reliable analysis and assessment of amber is hardly possible any more. Even in Berlin there are only slight possibilities. I suggest you approach the first expert in this field of gemmology, the former Professor of Mineralogy at the University of Königsberg, Dr. K. SCHLOSS- MACHER, currently director of the Gem Research Institute in Idar- Oberstein (Nahe). He is probably the only one who can fulfil your wish to examine the amber from Ugarit. The enclosed work on the official seal-stones of the Jewish High Priest may interest you. I also enclose a notice in the "Universitas" on my interpretation of the "Dream" of DESCARTES. Drawing on the original text, I have in the "Kant-Studien" (vol. 46, issue 2, 1954-55, pp. 135-156) a detailed interpretation published. Is there in Paris no prominent philosopher who is interested in the new interpretation and would support the inclusion of a translation of my work in a French journal?

With most cordial greetings Your very devoted
