Draft Report s/ Enk. Al. 1963 (XVIth campaign)

The excavations of Enkomi-Alasia 1963

The trenches to the East of the previously excavated area were multiplied, notably in the vicinity of the sanctuary of the Iron Age, whose first elements were uncovered in 1962. The east-west oriented sanctuary extends considerably towards the East and although we we have found again the wall closing a large hall where the sacrifices of animals took place, it is probable that the whole of the cult place has not yet been cleared.

The most important finds of our campaign of 1963 were made in this large hall of the sanctuary: On a sort of bench arranged all along the north wall more than 16 m long, an extraordinary number of skulls of large bovids were found piled in several layers. The fact that only the frontal part of the skulls with the horns were deposited gives the impression that they are bulls wild, whose hunting was practised in Cyprus at the beginning of the Iron Age. This is attested by as attested by the hunting scene engraved on a box of ivory game found in an Enkomi early tomb of this period. Besides the bulls, more than 100 skulls were identified still incomplete without jaws or teeth, some antlers of deer and horns of caprids (mouflon, wild goat) were observed. The total number of animal species having been sacrificed in this sanctuary cannot be determined until study by a zoologist, the skulls and horns have been consolidated and removed, reinforced with plaster.
