Enkomi - Alasia (Island of Cyprus), 14th Campaign, winter 1961. The ruins of the capital of the Bronze Age (1600-1100 B.C. ) of the island of Cyprus having been found by the Mission Archéologique Française beneath the fields of the village of Enkomi, near Famagusta, the 14th campaign of excavations in November 1961 made it possible to uncover the remains of important buildings reserved for worship situated in the vicinity of a populous and industrial quarter of the city (foundries of copper, dyeing works, goldsmiths' workshops). Some inscribed monuments written in the script still enigmatic Cypro-Minoan have been recovered grouped in one of the buildings burnt in the XIIIth c. B.C. and reoccupied after rough restoration in the 12th-11th c. - Numerous antiquities of the periods between the 20th and the 11th c. B.C. have been uncovered which seem to guide researchers towards the central and official quarter of the capital. Here must have been located the public buildings as well as the palace, seat of a dynasty which maintained alliances with the kingdom of Ugarit in Syria and the Pharaohs of Egypt of the Amarna Period.
