Excavations in the centre of the town. -

La troisième partie de la XVIII e campagne fut consacrée à la reprise de l' systematic and stratigraphic exploration of the centre-west quarter enclosed between the 5th and 6th streets, immediately south and south-east of the imposing Residence Achaean, known as Building 18 ( cf. Enkomi-Alasia, I, p. 239 ff).

On the occasion of a limited search for architectural study of the Iron levels I , it was possible to examine in detail the three floors of the final phases of this period. Several hearths cluttered with huge accumulations of pottery, including a jar Canaanite with seal impression on one of the handles, were uncovered in houses of unequal importance, judging by the architecture and the findings of objects, among which weights in haematite of very fine workmanship, of 25 and 60 grammes, fibulae, knives, fragments of buckets or cauldrons in bronze, with handle attachments showing great typological diversity, an incomplete Cypriot copper ingot, and for the glyptic of Cypriot Iron I, two dome-type seals and a steatite cylinder with two figures, dating from the time of the Sea Peoples . This group enriches in an interesting way the file of finds of objects from Enkomi-Alasia of the final period of the city . One of the bronze knives with curved back and raised end, of a form unusual on the island of Cyprus in the Bronze Age, shows strange typological affinities with knives from Central and south-eastern Europe in the Urnfield period, thus betraying undeniable influences emanating from Central Europe at the time of the migrations of the Sea Peoples and of the North . This knife moreover rested on the same floor as bowls with "wavyline" decoration, a painted jug with strainer spout, several jars of the same type as in Palestine in Iron I and at Enkomi itself in the sanctuary of the God of the Ingot; immediately above this group lay a deer antler with four tines .
