Karag. Enk. 1966 Floods at Enkomi, west sector
26 . XI 66. Ras Shamra - Ugarit. Dear Vassos, I hope you have returned in good health from your lecture tour in Germany and satisfied with this journey amid rains and snows that are reported, whereas we have here still fairly warm and dry weather. Our excavations are benefiting from it. - During your absence storms with exceptionally heavy rains broke over Enkomi and our excavations; forming a barrier the raised road from Enk. to Styllos has created a water retention over a vast surface, and the two only culverts provided discharged with great violence the waters which poured into the region of our excavations to the West, totally submerged it including the enclosure and cancelled the work and the stratigraphic sections obtained in this region. The muddy water then carried away over a certain length the road built to the west of the enclosure, little used moreover. The violence of the current was extraordinary. And we will only know next year what damage this flooding has been caused to our excavations. In any case it is necessary that the Public Works channel the waters passing under the Enkomi - Styllos road so that in future they will pour not into our excavations, but in the direction to the west towards the river passing behind Styllos.
