Nicosia, 19 August 1964

Dear Professor,

I first received the copy of your letter to Mr Karageorgjis, and the day before yesterday your letter registered of 11 August.

Allow me to assure you that the decision taken by M. KARAGEORGHIS ,in complete agreement with me, was dictated by the interest we both take in the French Archaeological Mission at Enkomi-Alasia.

Indeed, together we went to ENKOMI to ask the local masons for tenders. Their offers were discouraging, as they were the result of a clear understanding among them. They asked £ 2 700 whereas the Department of Antiquities had estimated the cost of construction at £ 2000. Giving preference to a contractor from Nicosia: Mr Elias ANTONIOU QUONA 4 Grammos Street (Accropolis Quarter) Nicosia Telephone 76 556 who offered to do the work for £ 2 250, which saved you £ 450, exactly 20%.

On the other hand, and this is where our decision appeared to us to accord with the wish expressed in your letter, with the exception of himself and a foreman who supervises the workmen ,all those employed on the construction are from Engkomi.

When M. KARAGEORGHIS received your telegram, the work had already begun. We could no longer go back. But since your objection concerned only the employment of local labour, you may be at ease. Your wishes are respected.

On the other hand, I will not conceal from you that your letter deeply distressed M. KARAGEORGHIS. Of course I did all I could to soothe his sensitivity and to make him understand that, from afar, misunderstandings can arise. I do not think I convinced him.

I will not fail to do everything in my power to help M. JOHNSTONE when he comes. I have already written to him. Tomorrow I will have the triptych made. I would be grateful if you would give instructions regarding the insurance of the car: marine, etc.

Assuring you once again of my entire devotion, I beg you to believe, Professor, in my very respectful sentiments.
