MINISTRY OF COMMUNICATIONS & WORKS. 42/64. DEPARTMENT OF ANTIQUITIES, NICOSIA.

12th August1964.

Dear Professor Schaeffer,

Thank you very much for your letter of 6th August. I am grateful for all you have done to recommend my wife to the Ministry. I have just heard from the French Embassy here (unofficially) that there are now two posts for Cyprus, both vacant; I hope that there is still some hope that my wife will get one.

The construction of the house at Enkomi started to-day. Together with my foreman I accompanied the contractor to the site and we supervised the tracing of the plan on the ground. We impressed upon him that we want first class work and best quality materials. Since I am still excavating at Salamis (in the archaic necropolis), I shall be in that area for some time, and so will my foreman. We shall both see that good work is done. No need to send money yet, I shall let you know when.

The water will be supplied to both houses from the main supply pipe.

The new Custodian is of very good quality but he will not be available until he finishes his national Service in the army, that is by the end of the year.

Please send plans for the changes you require in the existing house, so that work could be put in hand early. I suggest that the shelter above the verandah in front of the house should be replaced altogether by a new one. The wooden poles have been dislocated by the winds, some broken. If you want me to have it brought back to its original state, please let me know so that my foreman could calculate expenses.

You may be following the tragic events here. I hope that reason will soon prevail. This is, of course, a political problem which cannot be used by force. Needless to say that the situation will not hinder in any way your excavations, at least as far as I can say at this stage.

With all good wishes from my wife (who sends you her thanks) and my self, for Madame Schaeffer and self.

Yours very sincerely,

Vassos Karageorghis

VK/MC.
