DEPARTMENT OF ANTIQUITIES, NICOSIA.
7th August1964.
Dear Professor Schaeffer,
This is to confirm my telegram and your answer to it, about the acceptance of the tender for the construction of the house. It has not been an easy affair to have to deal with local contractors, so we finally decided to accept the tender of a Nicosia contractor who seems to be quite reliable. Work will start early next week, and we hope that the house will be habitable by the end of October.
Sorry for t he delay in answering your letters. In fact I waited to have something concrete to say to you about the house.
Your landrover is in good order, and the site is quite safe. The birds must be happy without being disturbed neither by shootings, nor, alas, by visitors.
{The full text of para. d) of the agreement is as follows:(The typist jumped one line, I am afraid!)
"The lease of the land on which the house will be built will be for a period of 25 years or for as long as the French Archaeological Expedition is permitted by the Republic of Cyprus to carry out excavations at Engomi or is engaged in studying the archaeological material discovered during any such excavations whichever period is the shorter;"
With all good wishes to you both.
Yours very sincerely, V. Karageorghis
P.S. My wife received a letter from the Ministry of Education in Paris that the post about which I wrote to you has been filled already. Strange ! We applied as soon as it became vacant !
