7th January, 1955

Dear Dr. Schaeffer,

With one interruption when the site became waterlogged Dhikaios continued with a small staff at Enkomi until Christmas. We have now issued the enclosed communique. The attempt to build up the chronology of this part of the site, and to dove-tail it into the known history of the period, is of course provisional pending final study of the pottery.

We transported all our dumps to the rocky area between the dig-house and the road to give the trees a better chance. Tree-planting has started.

I quite understand why Porter had to put off completion of the plan of the West Wall, as explained in your letter of 9th November, for which I thank you. I will get to work on the acquisition and connected questions when it arrives.

The Survey Department says we can get levels (with tripod) of the type of yours for about £30 in England and staffs for about £5. We have decided to buy it and have credited your account with £18 in accordance with your terms.

I was glad to hear of your further successes at Ras Shamra. I should certainly like to see that bossed masonry.

With all good wishes for 1955 to you and Mme. Schaeffer, in which my wife joins.

Yours sincerely,
