Dear Dr. Schaeffer,

Your Ugarit communiqué has appeared in the local press according to plan and I believe the timing was alright, for "the Times" got it simultaneously from its Paris correspondent.

Thank you for your letter dated 14th October. I was at Ugarit yesterday and found that your antiflood works had dealt satisfactorily with the first heavy rain. So far as weather permits Dikaios is working on the lower levels of the north wall area, disentangling the LCII and LCI structures from those which succeeded them. When the floors are turned to mud he turns to the road, beneath which there is a gap in the big-stone scheme of the wall which looks like the gate we expected, though we must go deeper to be sure.

I have arranged about the cultivation of the land. Also the financial matters in your para.8. We are paying the full salary of the Custodian during the current period of Dikaios' work on the site, when he is employed as our night-watchman. His winter uniform is now ready. He joined the ranks of those entitled to uniform too late to get a summer uniform this year. We have it in mind to plaster the walls of the excavation house.

When I receive Forrer's plan I shall put in hand the various operations which depend on it.-

negotiations for acquisition of the west wall area;

" " " " escarpment strip;

discussion with the Commissioner about arrangement of the west wall dump and the road diversion;

planting and fencing (also wire gate) of area between house and road.

I think that your level, staff and tripod would be useful to us for jobs where more elaborate instruments are not required. But I should be glad to know what you consider would be a fair price before deciding.

We have had rather wet weather here since your departure. I hope you have had some fine intervals for work at Ras Shamra.

Dr. C.F.A. Schaeffer, M.A., D.Litt., Mission de Ras Shamra, Minet-El-Beida par Lattaquie (Syrie).
