Dear Mr. Megaw,
I received your letter dated July 22nd with plans of the acquired land. As we are engaged at present merely on topographical work concerning the walls & the street system, it will not be possible to lease any of the areas so far acquired until the harvest of 1956. I am sorry for the former owners, but it can't be helped. At the end of this present season (October), I shall survey the ground and if areas should become available for cultivation until 56, we shall determine them together, if you agree. I keep the plans & bring them back with me.
I am glad you agree to my proposals & hope the Col. Secretary will give a favorable answer.
In addition to my indications concerning the tracing of the walls by Forrer-Kuss pending my arrival, I wanted to say, that they will really only trace the wall & not excavate the structures on both sides until the rock. My purpose is to determine the exacte perimetre in order to facilitate the research for the street systemes and the gates. So they will excavate only like the following scheme:
Drawing: schematic cross-section of a trench over a wall with dump to the right; labels: present sur.; city side; top of facing (outer) wall; face; dump; 0,50; 0,50; 0,50 à 1 m.; extra muros
Than we shall when I arrive determine which part will be further exca-
