22nd July, 1954

Dear Dr. Schaeffer,

Thank you for your letter of 9th July, 1954. Dikaios is now back at work here but I think greatly relieved to hear that your autumn programme will enable him to do what he has to do at Enkomi after you leave about mid-October, and not oblige him to go there in the hot weather before you start in September.

I agree with your proposal to hold over the public announcement of the termination of the joint-expedition.

As regards the kind offer of your Commission, when they heard of this development, to confer on Mr. Dikaios and myself the title of "Officier d' Academie" we much appreciate their proposal. As however the acceptance of such honours by those in British Government Service is subject to regulations which do not leave us any initiative, I have referred the matter to the Colonial Secretary. I shall let you know the result in due course.

I have heard from Plenderleith who confirms his readiness to deal with your tablet and votive ingots and have asked for co-operation regarding their transport to London to be sought from the British Embassy in Paris, from whom you should hear before long.

I have been asked which of the areas we have acquired at Enkomi may be leased for cultivation during the next 2 years, as these leases are usually arranged in August. I enclose two copies of a plan which is the best I have immediately available (it was prepared for quite a different purpose and is not upto date as regards last year's excavations; please ignore the red line). On one I have indicated in blue the acquired land; would you please indicate on the other any substantial areas of acquired land which you do not expect to be affected by your excavations prior to the harvest of 1956. Your deposit is receiving the income from such leases, but on the other hand you will have to pay compensation for any damage to crops caused if you excavated on areas leased for cultivation, as well as on any areas not yet acquired.

Yours sincerely,

A.H.S. Megaw
