uation of the Combined expedition, regret was expressed that the venture had to be interrupted. It was unanimously proposed to confer you and Mr. Dikaios in recognition of your cooperation with the French Mission and your support of our research the title of Officier d'Academie. As Secretary Gl of that body, I am asked to inquire if you would accept this expression of official gratitude. If so the diplomas would be proposed and eventually handed over to you and Mr. Dikaios by a French representative, probably M. Lapierre. There is no acknowledgement required; if you wish, a impersonnel letter to the President of the body would be appropriate. - It was also suggested, that you, as Director of the Ant. Service, should be awarded the next higher grade: Officier de l'Instruction Publique, but that supposes that you have already been made Officier d'Academie. As we remain in your debt, that could be done after the required legal delay. I very much hope that your a M. Dikaios answer will be favorable. There are absolutely no thanks due to me. — I told you that Plenderleith is ready to clean the ingot a the tablet. I await your instructions. Yours sincerely C. F. A. Schaeffer.
