DRAFT PRESS COMMUNIQUE

In August 1948, it was announced, that following the initial excavations of Dr. C.F.A. Schaeffer's French Archaeological Mission in the Bronze Age town site at Engomi, the Antiquities Department had agreed, on Dr. Schaeffer's invitation, to join forces with him in the systematic exploration of this large and important site.

In the joint excavations which have since been proceeding, the Department, in a series of campaigns conducted by Mr. P. Dikaios, Curator of the Cyprus Museum, and has made a substantial contribution to the investigation of the central and northern sectors, and arrangements have lately been agreed under which the Department will now withdraw from the joint enterprise.

The Department will undertake as soon as possible the publication of the results of its work at Engomi, and Mr. Dikaios is at present engaged on some supplementary investigations in the areas he has already excavated, in connection with the preparation of his report.

Meanwhile the French Mission proposes to continue its own excavations at Engomi, where its previous campaigns have determined the limits of the town and much of the layout of its streets, and have laid bare numerous buildings fronting on them. Dr. Schaeffer, who has already published the results of his first campaigns, is expected to undertake his next campaign in the autumn of this year.
