Dear Dr. Shaeffer,
Thank you for your letter of 3rd May from the States which reached me on the 25th. I have now had an opportunity of discussing our forthcoming supplementary work at Enkomi with Dikaios, who at the moment is rounding off his work at Sotira for the Curium Expedition.
One thing I fear I did not make clear: that we propose to publish only one volume on our work at Enkomi. Consequently the order in which we do the supplementary work on the two sites will not affect the date on which the report on the Temple area will appear, or reach the proof stage at which you will see it. Our preference for completing the field work in the north area first is due to its wealth of evidence for those earlier periods which are less well represented in the Temple area. The two areas are widely separated but to a remarkable degree they are complementary and yield together a complete chronological picture. If Dikaios were to complete first what has to be done in the Temple area, and then proceed to prepare his final report on it, it seems probable that when he subsequently undertook the supplementary work in the north area his Temple report would require much revision, in which case its appearance would not be accelerated but delayed.
We are no less keen than you to see our work on the Temple area completed as regards both supplementary field work (which does not amount to very much) and preparation of the report. But I feel this will be done both better and quicker if we first complete our supplementary work in the lower levels of the north area.
vertical line spanning the next 5 linesI should say also that I do not feel strongly about the alteration of the termination date for the combined expedition. I put it forward as a suggestion, but if it does not appeal to you, I do not wish to pursue it. But I will await your decision before approaching the Government for the additional funds we require. In the meatime we have sufficient to make a good start with the work to be done. I do not myself feel that this falls outside the scope of "such supplementary studies and investigations as the preparation of those reports may require", which are permissible under the terms of our last agreement (para.7). Certainly having dealt with the area where the road has previously blocked the junction of the main north area with that of the "Tower" outside it, an agreed objective of our supplementary investigations, I readily accept your suggestion that we open no further ground, unless of course you should specifically agree to some extension which we propose in order to clarify remains already exposed. And that holds good both if the termination date is changed and if it is not, for our objective is simply to present a clear picture of the remains we have already excavated.
I have noted your wishes in regard to acquisition of properties along the west wall and elsewhere a We have
