12th April1954.

Dear Dr. Schaeffer,

I have to thank you for the inventory of your belongings left at Enkomi which you returned with your letter of 5th February and to apologise for the delay in acknowledging it.

I was glad to hear that funds for your 1954 campaign have been approved. I note that you are thinking of coming in September and plan further work on the lines of your 1953 campaign to complete the topographical picture.

We have been dealing with various claims on the French Mission arising out of your last campaign, paying from your deposit the amount certified by the local authorities as fair and reasonable. No large amounts are involved.

The new road has absorbed some of the dumps but not yet the distant ones. Those concerned find it more economical to excavate earth from land nearer to their embankment, outside the walls; but we are discouraging this.

It is now doubtful whether the new road will be in use when Dikaios starts his supplementary work in June. In that case we will try to arrange a temporary local road diversion enabling him to excavate the area of the present road and unite the two sections of his dig which it divides. Elsewhere there seems to be more work than I realised still to be done in this "North Area", before it is ready for publication. There are extensive areas where the lower layers have yet to be examined and the work on the wall itself in the area we examined remains incomplete until our various trenches along it have been linked up. Dikaios' plan is to complete what has to be done here and proceed with preparation of a final report on this area fist, and only when that is done will he turn again to the "Temple Area", where however there is but little further work to be done on the site. It seems that he will this year be fully occupied with the north area, and that the work which must be done there will require more funds than the token sum which has been included in our budget on the basis of my proposals of nearly a year ago. But I feel I shoud acquaint you with this position, in which I find it necessary to ask the Government for further funds, because the scale of the work envisaged is larger than I gave you to understand and perhaps larger than the type of supplementary work permitted under our agreement regarding the ending of the joint-expedition, the agreed date of which has already passed.

It occured to me that it might be more realistic if we could agree to regard Dikaios' coming campaign as the closing one of our collaboration, and postpone the closing date of the latter to the end of this year, always on the understanding that we confine our attention to the two areas with which we have so far being dealing. This
